When I roam the aisles of the Dollar Tree, I am always looking for snack foods to bring to work with me to save on the ever rising prices at the vending machines. A snack cake can cost now $1.50 for one piece. When you have a craving for something sweet, you need to bring it from home.

This is when recently, I came across Mrs. Freshley’s Swiss Rolls on the shelve. A box of eight twin packs is a $1.00 instead of the Hostess brands that will run between $3.50 to $4.00 a box. The quality and taste are very similar.

I have only had the Swiss Rolls, which is a thinly rolled chocolate sponge cake with a sweet creamy filling. These light desserts are then dipped in a milk chocolate coating and have a light crunch when you bite into them. There is a richness throughout the cake. They also hold very nicely when you travel with them.

The taste harks back to when I was a kid in elementary school and you rushed through your sandwich just to get to these desserts and have taken on a new role of nostalgia in the era of COVID.

These sweet little delights will melt in your mouth and have a nice taste of the milk chocolate coating. I highly recommend them.

I also had an opportunity when I revisited my local Dollar Tree to try Mrs. Freshley’s Dreamies, which is their version of the Twinkie. These soft golden cakes have a delicious creamy filling, and the sponge cake has a sweet rich flavor to it. Similar to Twinkies but don’t have that banana flavor to them that a Twinkie has when you initially bite into it. Still, I was impressed by the quality of these snack cakes. You get two in an individual pack.

One of my new favorites is the Mrs. Freshley’s Donut Sticks. These sweet little delights are packaged in a set of three donuts. These are baked with a sweet dough and doused with a heavenly layer of glaze. These will dazzle any sweet tooth.

The Mrs. Freshley’s Donut Sticks are a delight!

I just bought a box of the Honey Buns, and they are delicious. These sweet rolls are loaded with cinnamon and topped with a thick while glaze that really brings out the sweetness of this delightful little snack. Each bite is a complex flavor of sweetness.

The Mrs. Freshley’s Pinwheels are sweet and rich and are the perfect breakfast food or with a hot cup of tea.

All of these wonderful snack cakes bring back memories of days on the playground and afterschool treats from our parents. This was when we would reach into our lunchboxes and look for what our mother’s would pack us for dessert.
